The waters off the San Diego coast and south to Baja are some of the best in the world ( I think) for deep-sea fishing. Each summer, the warm waters attract a huge number and selection of fish. From three to 10 miles offshore, the catch includes calico bass, sand bass, white sea bass, barracuda, mackerel and dorado. Venture out 60 to 80 miles and you'll find albacore, blue fin tuna, yellow fin tuna, big eye tuna, skip jack and yellow tail. If you're itching to head out to the deep blue sea, choose from a many different tours Local commercial tour operators offer a variety of trips, from half-day tours to three-week adventures to destinations like the Coronado Islands, just off the Baja coast. As the water temperature lowers in winter months, fish head south and tours follow. From December to late spring, tours trek all the way to Cabo San Lucas on the southern most tip of Baja, or even farther. Things you will need before you take a tour Most sport fishing tours provide rods and other essential gear as part of the overall fee. If you're bringing your own pole, make sure you've got a minimum 20-pound tackle. Don't expect to catch any of the giants of the sea with anything smaller. You'll likely get help and advice from the crew as you battle your catch. With their long, hooked spears, crew members can help pluck even the toughest scaly warriors from the water. For Baja trips, you'll need to purchase a separate Mexican fishing permit in addition to a U.S. license. Most tours assist with licenses and permits. Then go out and have some fun
