Fishing on the bay and or Lagoons
The county's tranquil bay and lagoon waters provide anglers with an ample selection of saltwater fish. You'll rarely find the big game fish of the deep, but there's still plenty of perch, croaker, halibut, rays and shark. With rocks, docks and boats providing desired structure for the fish, bays and lagoons can be a bonanza for the knowledgeable fisherman. Aside from a few places reserved for swimming, there are no bad spots to fish at Mission Bay. With more than 4,000 acres to explore, the Bay is the largest man-made aquatic park on the West Coast. Quivira Basin, located in the southwest corner of the Bay, is an ideal spot to cast a line no matter the season. With the public bait barge nearby, an operation that eternally spills anchovies into the bay, the basin has no problem attracting fish.

Carlsbad's Agua Hedionda Lagoon, a scenic 400-acre body of water near the coast, is a popular spot to catch halibut, sea bass and croaker. Fishing is limited to the 52-acre passive use area in the lagoon's lower east end. Equipment and Licenses:
You won't need any elaborate equipment to have a great time on the bays and lagoons. But to pick up the essentials, check out a bait and tackle shop (see sidebar). Grab a fistful of blood worms at Sea forth Sport fishing and you'll be set for the afternoon. But beware, these crawlers, flown in from Maine each week, bleed just like you or me and have a tendency to sting like a bee. Fishing licenses are required for persons 12 and older on Mission Bay. A license also is required at Agua Hedionda; rules vary throughout the county. Check with individual locations for license information. |
