Pier & Surf Fishing

Pier & Surf Fishing

You've got to go deep to catch the behemoths, but shorebound anglers will still find lots of fish to hook along San Diego's piers and beaches. From sharks and stingrays to barracuda and bonita, a mix of creatures calls the shallows home. If you're casting in waters from one to six feet deep, you're likely to find corbina, perch and croaker. Mackerel, which is an ideal bait fish, halibut, bonita and barracuda are found in deeper waters, usually six to 20 feet.

Popular among vacationers and locals alike, San Diego's piers are great spots to relax and cast away. Crystal Pier, located in Pacific Beach, is a perfect place to fish, take a stroll or just people-watch. There's a small collection of fishermen at the pier on most days, with the biggest crowds on summer afternoons. Ocean Beach Pier, with its fully stocked bait and tackle shop, is a favorite with local anglers. Built in 1966, it's reportedly the longest concrete pier on the West Coast. Oceanside Pier and downtown's Embarcadero also are popular spots. I really Like to relax and fish this way.

From the shores of San Onofre south to Imperial Beach, there are plenty of sandy spots for surf fishing. The calm waves of Silver Strand Beach, a slender leg of sand between Imperial Beach and Coronado, are ideal for the sport. Oceanside and Ocean Beach are also great locales to surf fish. Fishing of any sort is prohibited along the extensive marine preserve from La Jolla Cove north to Torrey Pines.

You don't need a fancy rod to have success off San Diego's piers or beaches. Shakespeare's Ugly Stick is a popular and inexpensive choice. Unless you find yourself battling with the ocean bottom or a stray Great White, a 10- to 20-pound tackle will do.

Fishing licenses are not required at San Diego city piers. Anglers 12 and older will need a license for surf fishing in the city of San Diego. Piers and beaches in the rest of San Diego County have their own rules; check with each of these locations for license info.
